Buyer's guide
Short version: buy a digital four-in-one, expect it to be imperfect, and use the trend rather than the number. The long version is below, including the four ways these meters mislead people and how to work around each one.
Heads up: the meter links on this page are Amazon affiliate links, so Plant Tender earns a small commission if you buy through one — under a dollar a meter. A digital four-in-one probe. One instrument, one purchase, and it reads four things: soil moisture, light, temperature and humidity.
Both halves of that are doing work. Four-in-one is for the light reading. An enormous share of houseplant problems that present as watering problems are light problems — a plant in a dim corner drinks a fraction of what the same plant drinks in a bright one, and watering it on the schedule that worked by the window will rot it. Without a light reading you are diagnosing with one eye shut.
Digital is for the display. A numeric readout is a number you can write down, compare to last week, and — the part that matters here — photograph. A needle resting between two tick marks is an impression, not a measurement, and two people reading the same dial will log two different values. The underlying sensor is no more honest in a digital meter than an analog one; it is just legible.
Rough prices as of August 2026: analog dials run about $9–15, digital four-in-ones sit closer to $30, and per-pot Bluetooth sensors are $15–35 each. Amazon moves all of these constantly, so treat those as a shape, not a quote.

Before you buy one
All four are well documented and none of them are a defect in your particular unit. Knowing them is most of what separates a useful meter from a confusing one.
The probe measures conductivity, and dissolved salts conduct. Fertilizer and hard tap water build up in the soil over a season and push the reading up independently of how much water is actually there.
What to do: flush the pot with plain water occasionally, and be suspicious of a reading that has drifted upward across a season without your watering changing.
Hits anyone who fertilizesBark, perlite and pumice leave air gaps around the probe. Air breaks the circuit, so a genuinely damp aroid or orchid mix can read near zero.
What to do: tell the app what medium the plant is in, insert slowly and firmly, and read the same spot every time so at least the comparison is honest.
Hits aroid and orchid growers hardestMost of these probes are galvanic — two dissimilar metals generating a small current, which is why so many need no battery. The reaction that produces the signal slowly consumes the probes.
What to do: wipe the probes dry after each use, never store one buried in a pot, and replace the meter when freshly watered soil stops reading high.
Hits everyone, eventuallyEvery pot holds a saturated layer at the bottom, and its height is set by the mix's particle size — not by the pot's shape. The same probe at the same depth is inside that layer in a small pot and above it in a large one.
What to do: go about two-thirds of the pot's depth, midway between stem and rim, and use the same spot every single time.

Every flaw above is an absolute accuracy problem. None of them stop a meter being consistent with itself — one pot, one mix, one probe, one insertion spot. That consistency is the thing worth using.
So the reading to act on is not "4". It is "this pot went from 7 to 3 in five days, and last month the same drop took nine." That comparison survives salty soil, chunky mix and a half-corroded probe, because all three distort both readings the same way. It is also the comparison a meter physically cannot make for you, because it has no memory — which is the entire reason to log readings somewhere instead of squinting at a display.

The failure modes above are not our observations alone. Ohio Tropics, an independent houseplant authority with no meter to sell, states plainly that chunky orchid-bark mixes yield very misleading readings. Laidback Gardener has a post titled "When Moisture Meters Fail". Vegetronix describes the corrosion mechanism in detail — worth reading, and worth knowing that they manufacture the expensive alternative, so read them with that in mind.
The perched-water-table behaviour is the one most commonly described incorrectly elsewhere. The saturated zone's height depends on soil particle size and charge, not on pot dimensions: a tall pot and a short pot of the same mix have saturated zones of identical height. The practical consequence is not that deep pots stay wetter — it is that pot depth changes where your probe sits relative to a fixed-height zone.

Not on their own, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. These probes measure electrical conductivity and report it as moisture. Fertilizer salts push the reading up when the soil is dry; chunky bark or perlite mixes push it down when the soil is wet; and the probes corrode over months of use, which drifts the reading toward nothing.
What they are is consistent within a single pot — same soil, same salts, same probe. That makes the trend reliable even when the absolute number is not, which is why Plant Tender leans on the change between readings rather than the reading itself.
Yes, verifiably, and by design. The two probes are dissimilar metals and the electrochemical reaction that generates the signal slowly consumes them. Wipe the probes dry after every use and never leave one buried in a pot. If a meter that used to read 8 in freshly watered soil now reads 3, replace it — it is not telling you your watering changed.
Almost always fertilizer or tap-water mineral buildup. Dissolved salts conduct electricity, and the meter cannot distinguish "conductive because wet" from "conductive because salty". If you fertilize regularly and your readings have crept up over the season without your watering changing, that is the salt, not the water. Flushing the pot thoroughly with plain water resets both the soil and the readings.
Bark, perlite and pumice leave air pockets, and air does not conduct. The probe touches less soil, so the circuit is poor and the reading comes out low even in genuinely damp mix. This hits aroid and orchid growers hardest — exactly the people most likely to buy a meter. It is why Plant Tender asks what medium each plant is in before it interprets anything.

This matters more than people expect. Every pot has a saturated layer at the bottom, and — counterintuitively — its height is set by the potting mix's particle size, not by the pot's dimensions. A 3-inch probe in a 4-inch pot of peaty mix sits inside that layer and reads wet almost permanently. The same probe in a 10-inch pot sits well above it and can read bone dry while the root ball below is waterlogged. Same meter, same soil, opposite answers, purely from pot geometry.
Only if you want continuous readings from one specific pot. They cost more, need one per plant, and live in their own app. For a collection, a single walkaround meter plus an app that reads it is both cheaper and more useful.
Less than the type. These meters are largely the same handful of designs under different names. Buy a digital four-in-one from any seller with a real review count, keep the receipt, and expect to replace it eventually.
