Can you leave a moisture meter in the soil?
There's a fiddle leaf fig in my living room that I nearly killed by being lazy in a very specific way. I'd bought a probe, felt very proud of myself for owning a probe, and then decided the smartest move was to just leave it stuck in the pot. Set it and forget it. Glance over from the couch every so often, see what it said, move on with my life. It seemed like the obvious upgrade from a schedule — a permanent little sentry reporting on the soil so I never had to think about it again.
For about four days this felt like genius. Then the number stopped moving. It sat in the same spot, day after day, whether I'd watered or not, whether the top inch was bone dry or damp. I remember standing there tapping the display like a barometer in an old movie, as if it just needed encouragement. It didn't need encouragement. It needed me to understand what it actually was.
The part where I trusted the wrong thing
A soil moisture meter, mine included, is not a sensor logging a pot the way a thermostat logs a room. It's an unpowered galvanic probe — two dissimilar metals sitting in soil, measuring the electrical conductivity between them and printing that on a scale. It was never built to sit still and report continuously. Two identical meters in the same pot at the same moment will often disagree with each other, and the same meter moved two inches to the left in the same pot will give you a different number too. That's not a defect. That's just what an uncalibrated conductivity probe does.
Left standing in the soil, mine wasn't tracking moisture over time so much as tracking whatever local chemistry had built up right around those two metal prongs — plus, I'd guess, some mineral crust forming right at the contact point, since fertilizer salts and hard-water buildup raise a reading on their own with no extra water involved. A pot that stops ever reading dry isn't necessarily a wet pot. It's often a salty one. Mine had probably done exactly that: the number froze high not because the fig was drowning, but because I'd fed it a month earlier and left the meter sitting in exactly the spot where those salts had settled.
Meanwhile the actual moisture — the thing I bought the meter to know — was doing whatever it wanted, undetected, because I wasn't taking a fresh reading. I was reading a monument to old fertilizer.
Can you leave a moisture meter in the soil, or does it need a fresh check?
Here's the honest answer: you can physically leave it there, nothing melts, but it stops telling you anything true almost immediately. The value in one of these meters was never "leave it and let it watch." The value is in a deliberate reading, taken the same way, at the same depth, in the same spot, compared against what that same pot did last time. That's the whole method. Skip the method and the hardware doesn't save you.
The correct way to take a reading is almost embarrassingly manual: push the probe about two-thirds of the way down the pot, roughly midway between the stem and the rim, because that's where the roots that matter actually live. A shallow poke into the topsoil measures the part of the pot that dries first and fastest, which is the least informative real estate in there. And you do this fresh, on purpose, not as a passive resident of the pot. Same depth, same spot, every single time — that consistency is what makes a reading comparable to that pot's own history at all. A number without a comparison point is just trivia.
This matters more than it sounds like it should because overwatered and underwatered plants look almost identical from the outside — both droop, both yellow. The soil is the only honest tell, and a stale or badly-placed reading is functionally the same as no reading, which is why the same people keep making the same watering mistake on repeat.
What the fig actually needed
Once I started pulling the probe out between checks and taking a real reading — same depth, same spot, once a week — the picture got obvious fast. My fig, sitting a few feet back from an east window in what actually qualifies as bright indirect light, was drying out on a completely different rhythm than the tropicals on my shelf, which generally want to drop into roughly the 20 to 40 percent range before their next drink. And the number genuinely does say percent on the display, with a band label next to it — this meter never shows a bare 1 to 10, no matter how many older analog dial probes out there use that kind of scale.

The fig is fine. Better than fine — new leaves, no drama. The probe still lives in a drawer between uses instead of standing sentry in the pot, and that turned out to be the actual upgrade: not a smarter sensor, just a better habit around the dumb one I already owned.
