It measures electrical conductivity between two metal prongs and prints that on a scale. In dense, uniform potting mix, conductivity and moisture move together closely enough that the number is a decent stand-in for "how wet is this pot." In a chunky aroid mix, that relationship falls apart, because you've got air gaps, inert bark, and pockets of damp coir all sitting next to each other in the same handful of medium.

Why chunky mix breaks the conductivity assumption

A meter reading assumes conductivity tracks moisture, and that assumption holds in dense potting soil but breaks down in chunky and inert media — bark and orchid mix, chunky aroid blends, succulent grit, semi-hydro, pon. In those mixes the probe often ends up resting against an air gap or a bark chunk and reads far drier than the pot actually is. It's not a defect in the meter. It's an unpowered galvanic probe reading conductivity between two dissimilar metals, and two meters in the same pot — or the same meter moved a couple inches — routinely disagree even in ordinary soil. Chunky mix just makes that disagreement dramatic instead of subtle.

I spent a week testing this on purpose, probing the standleyana in five or six spots each time I checked it, writing the numbers down like I was running an experiment on myself. The readings ranged from single digits to the high 30s within the same pot on the same day. If I'd been chasing an exact percentage the way I might for a plant in regular soil, I'd have driven myself in circles.

The part where I made it worse

My first instinct was to fix the "problem" by watering more, on the theory that if half my readings said dry, the plant must be thirsty on average. That's backwards, and it's the same trap that fixed watering schedules fall into generally — every pot dries at its own rate depending on species, pot size, mix, and season, and a single monstera might need water twice a week in July and once every three weeks in January. What still works is consistency. Probe at the same depth — about two thirds of the way down, midway between the stem and the rim, where the roots that matter actually sit — and at the same spot in the pot every single time. A shallow reading measures topsoil, which dries first and tells you the least. Once you're consistent about where you check, the trend becomes trustworthy even if the absolute number is noisy: if that exact spot in that exact pot reads 15% and dropping this week compared to sitting at 30% for the last two weeks, that direction of change is real information, even though the number itself would mean something different in a neighbor's pot of the same plant in the same mix.

This is also where salts complicate things further — fertilizer buildup raises conductivity and therefore the reading with no extra water present, so a pot that never reads low even weeks after a watering is worth suspecting for salt buildup rather than blaming your watering habits or the plant.

The part where the guessing stopped

What actually changed things for me wasn't a better probing technique, it was giving up on treating any single reading as a verdict and start treating a string of them as a story.
