This matters because the number that actually tells you something useful isn't "how wet is it right this second," it's "how wet does this pot stay, and how fast does it dry." That second question only makes sense once gravity has done its job and pulled the free water down through the drainage holes, and the remaining moisture has had a chance to spread evenly through the root zone. For most potting mixes in a pot with real drainage, that settling takes a solid twenty to thirty minutes at minimum — longer in a dense, moisture-retentive mix, less in something chunky. Checking immediately gives you a number that's really just measuring gravity in progress.
The other habit worth building alongside this is where you put the probe. Push it in shallow, near the topsoil, and you're reading the layer that dries first and fastest regardless of what's happening lower down — which is exactly the layer that swings hardest right after watering. Get the probe about two thirds of the way down the pot, roughly midway between the stem and the rim, since that's where the roots that actually matter are living. Same spot, same depth, every time, so the number you get is comparable to the last one you took on that same plant.
