What the numbers actually mean, once you're reading the right depth
Most common tropical houseplants — pothos, monstera, philodendron, peace lily — want their soil moisture to drop to roughly the 20–40% range before they're ready to drink again. That's a percentage on a proper four-in-one meter's display, not a 1-10 scale and not a dry/moist/wet needle position — those are different instruments with different arcs, and comparing across them is a band, never an exact conversion. Succulents and cacti sit at the opposite extreme, wanting to see something like 0–10% — bone dry to the bottom of the pot — before they get watered again, which is why a finger test that only checks the top inch is especially dangerous for them: the surface feels dry constantly, but the meter down at root depth is often still holding damp.
