Pilea peperomioides propagation: how the babies form and when to detach them
The first pup showed up on a Tuesday, poking out of the soil about two inches from the base of my pilea like it had been planning its arrival for weeks. I almost didn't notice it — I was leaning down to check a yellowing leaf on the mother plant when I saw this tiny round coin of a leaf, already unfurled, sitting there like it had always been part of the deal.

Why pileas make babies in the first place
Pilea peperomioides is famous for throwing pups — small plantlets that emerge from the base of the mother plant, sometimes from the soil near the main stem, sometimes right up out of the main stem itself a little higher up. This isn't a fluke or a stress response, it's just what the species does when it's reasonably happy: established roots, decent light, no drama. The plant is essentially cloning itself as a side project while it goes about its regular business of growing leaves.
The catch is that a pup that just poked through the soil is not the same thing as a pup that's ready to leave home. In those first couple of weeks it's still entirely dependent on the mother's root system — it has no roots of its own yet, even though the leaf on top looks fully formed and photosynthesis-ready. Cutting or pulling it too early, like I did, means asking a rootless baby to survive on nothing while it tries to grow roots from scratch in water or soil. Sometimes it works. Often it just sits there, alive but stalled, for a discouraging amount of time.
The part where I made it worse
After my first failed water-propagation attempt, I did what a lot of people do: I panicked in the other direction and left the next three pups alone for months, worried I'd disturb the mother plant's roots if I dug around too soon. Meanwhile I was watering the whole pot on a Sunday-morning schedule because that's what fit my calendar, not because the soil was asking for it. That's a mistake by itself — every pot dries at its own rate depending on the plant, the pot, the mix, and the season, and fixed schedules are the single biggest reason people either drown their plants or starve them. When to actually detach a pilea pup
Once I backed off the schedule and let the soil dry properly between waterings, the plant recovered, and the pups kept coming — steadier, better-rooted ones this time. The signal I was waiting for wasn't a size on a ruler, it was independence: a pup is ready to separate once it has grown its own visible roots, which usually means letting it stay attached to the mother for a few more weeks past when it first appears, especially if it emerged straight from soil near the base rather than higher up the main stem. When you gently dig around it, you want to see white roots of its own, not just a bare stem hoping for the best. If you can tease it away with roots attached, either using a clean cut where it connects to the mother's stem or root, or by gently separating it from the shared soil, it can usually go straight into its own small pot of fresh mix rather than a cup of water. Pups taken with roots already established skip the stall-out phase entirely, which is the whole reason my second and third attempts worked so much better than my first.
The simple win, if you're doing this for the first time: leave the pup alone longer than feels necessary, check for its own roots before you cut, and pot it directly rather than routing it through water first if it already has roots to work with.
The part where I stopped guessing about water
