Monstera: what your moisture meter reading means
The healthy band for a monstera, on whichever scale your meter prints — and, more usefully, what the same number means in different situations.

That is the band you are aiming for, not a target to hit exactly. These ranges are published horticultural consensus and have not yet been through expert review — they are deliberately banded wide.
What each reading means for a monstera
A monstera wants water below 30% and starts staying wetter than it likes above 60%. On the 1–10 probe most people own, that works out like this.

The number depends on your soil, and most charts ignore that
A monstera is usually in chunky aroid mix — bark, perlite and coco chips over a little peat.
Aroid mix is mostly air. Water runs through it and drains away in seconds, so a monstera pot swings from genuinely wet to genuinely dry faster than the same plant in dense potting soil, and the probe sees the swing. In a bark-heavy mix expect the reading to fall two to three points in the first 48 hours after a drink and then crawl. In dense soil the same plant will sit near the top of its range for a week — which is exactly when people conclude the meter is broken.
Adjusting for your mix
Chunky mix: treat readings as roughly one point LOW — the probe is bridging air gaps as often as soil, so a genuine 4 often prints as a 3. Dense potting soil: treat them as one point HIGH, and lean on the dry end of the range. Semi-hydro (LECA): this scale does not apply at all; go by reservoir level.

Where to put the probe
Halfway between the stem and the pot wall, angled slightly away from the center, about two-thirds of the way down. Monstera roots are thick and ropey and a probe that hits one reads the root, not the soil — if the needle slams to the top the instant you insert it, pull it out and try a spot two inches over. Avoid the aerial roots entirely.
How a monstera actually fails
Monsteras rot from the base of the stem, and by the time the leaves tell you, the crown is already soft. The tell is a yellow lower leaf with a wet, dark spot at the petiole junction rather than a clean crisp edge. A monstera that reads mid-range for two straight weeks without dropping is not a happy monstera — it is a pot that is not drying, and that is the beginning of root rot regardless of what the top of the soil looks like.
Common situations
My monstera reads 4 — do I water it?
Not on that number alone. A 4 two days after a thorough soak in chunky aroid mix means the mix is holding what it should and you should leave it. The same 4 nine days after watering, in the same pot, means the mix has stalled — either it has broken down into fines and is holding water it should have shed, or the pot is too big for the root ball. Same reading, opposite action, and the variable is days elapsed, not the number.
Why does my monstera read 8 when the top of the soil is bone dry?
Because the top inch of chunky mix dries within hours while the core stays wet for days — the two are barely related. This is the single most common misread on aroids. It is also why surface-feel watering kills monsteras: the surface is telling the truth about the surface and nothing else. Push the probe two-thirds down and believe that number instead.
My meter never drops below 6 no matter how long I wait.
Three candidates, in order of likelihood. The mix has decomposed into fines and no longer drains — repot. There is fertilizer salt buildup raising conductivity independently of water, which reads as permanent moisture — flush the pot thoroughly and re-check in a week. Or the pot has no drainage and there is standing water at the bottom that the probe is reaching. None of those are fixed by watering less.
One reading can't be trusted. The curve can.
Everything above is really one argument: a single number from a cheap conductivity probe is not a measurement, it is a data point with a large error bar. Fertilizer salt raises it. Air gaps in chunky mix lower it. Probe depth moves it several points. Two meters in the same pot disagree.
What survives all of that is the trend. The same meter, in the same spot, in the same pot, read over a few weeks, tells you how fast this specific monstera in this specific mix in this specific room actually dries — and that is the thing that answers "do I water it", which no chart can do for you.
