Succulents: what your moisture meter reading means
The healthy band for a succulents, on whichever scale your meter prints — and, more usefully, what the same number means in different situations.

That is the band you are aiming for, not a target to hit exactly. These ranges are published horticultural consensus and have not yet been through expert review — they are deliberately banded wide.
What each reading means for a succulents
A succulents wants water below 8% and starts staying wetter than it likes above 30%. On the 1–10 probe most people own, that works out like this.

The number depends on your soil, and most charts ignore that
A succulents is usually in gritty cactus mix — coarse sand, pumice and perlite, minimal organic matter.
This is the hardest medium on the list for a conductivity probe. Grit and pumice do not conduct between the pins, so a succulent pot with genuine water present can read at the very bottom of the scale. Taking a low reading at face value and watering is the single most common way people kill succulents with a meter — the tool is telling you about the medium, not the water.
Adjusting for your mix
Proper gritty mix: readings run two points or more LOW and compress into the bottom of the scale; use the trend and the leaves, not the absolute number. Nursery potting soil (what most supermarket succulents arrive in): readings are honest but the mix stays wet far too long — repotting into grit is the highest-value thing you can do for the plant. Terracotta drops the reading substantially faster than plastic.

Where to put the probe
Deep, at the pot edge, away from the shallow root plate. Succulent roots are fine and near the surface, so a shallow probe hits the layer that dries first and always reads dry. Go to the bottom third. In a small pot — and most succulents are in small pots — the probe may simply be too large to give a meaningful reading at all, and the weight of the pot in your hand is a better instrument.
How a succulents actually fails
Rot from the center of the rosette outward, and it is fast and unrecoverable. The tell is a lower leaf that goes translucent and yellow and detaches with no resistance, or a mushy soft spot at the very center. Compare with a thirsty succulent, where the lower leaves go thin, wrinkled and papery but stay firmly attached. Translucent and squishy is water; wrinkled and dry is thirst; the two are commonly confused and the treatments are opposite.
Common situations
My succulent reads 1 constantly — should I water more often?
Almost certainly not. In a proper gritty mix a probe reads at the bottom of the scale nearly all the time because grit does not conduct, so a permanent 1 is the expected result and not evidence of drought. Use the leaves instead: plump and firm means leave it alone, and slightly wrinkled lower leaves means water thoroughly. If you want the meter to be useful on a succulent, watch it climb after you water and then fall — the shape of that curve is informative even when the absolute number is not.

For a succulent in gritty mix that is genuinely wet, and it should be falling day by day. If it holds at 5 for more than about four days the pot is not draining — most likely it is still in nursery soil, or it is in a decorative pot with no hole. Both are urgent for this plant. Soak-and-dry is the entire method: thoroughly wet, then completely dry, with no damp middle period.
Bottom leaves are yellow and falling off.
Check whether they are translucent and squishy or wrinkled and papery before you do anything. Translucent and squishy at a mid-range reading is overwatering and the pot needs to dry out immediately. Wrinkled and papery at a bottom-of-scale reading is thirst and it wants a thorough soak. A couple of dry lowest leaves shed slowly is also just normal aging in a healthy plant.
One reading can't be trusted. The curve can.
Everything above is really one argument: a single number from a cheap conductivity probe is not a measurement, it is a data point with a large error bar. Fertilizer salt raises it. Air gaps in chunky mix lower it. Probe depth moves it several points. Two meters in the same pot disagree.
What survives all of that is the trend. The same meter, in the same spot, in the same pot, read over a few weeks, tells you how fast this specific succulents in this specific mix in this specific room actually dries — and that is the thing that answers "do I water it", which no chart can do for you.
