What each reading means for a peace lily

A peace lily wants water below 40% and starts staying wetter than it likes above 70%. On the 1–10 probe most people own, that works out like this.

The number depends on your soil, and most charts ignore that

A peace lily is usually in moisture-retentive peat-based mix — this is one of the few that genuinely wants it.

Peace lilies want to stay evenly damp, so the retentive mix they are sold in is correct rather than a compromise. That makes the meter more useful here than almost anywhere else: the target band is narrow, the plant reacts fast in both directions, and the pot actually holds a stable reading you can track.

Adjusting for your mix

Standard peat mix: the range on this page applies directly. Amended with bark or perlite: the pot dries faster than a peace lily likes; shift your watering trigger up by about a point. Self-watering pot: the reservoir keeps the base permanently near the top of the scale — probe the upper half only, or the number is meaningless.

Where to put the probe

Mid-pot, mid-depth, between the outer crown and the pot wall. Peace lily roots are fine and dense and fill the pot completely, so almost anywhere gives a usable reading — this is the easiest species on the list to probe. In a badly root-bound pot the probe will struggle to enter at all, which is itself the signal that it needs repotting.

How a peace lily actually fails

Repeated dramatic wilting. A peace lily is famous for collapsing theatrically and recovering within hours of water, and because the recovery is so complete people treat the wilt as the watering schedule. Every one of those collapses costs it root mass and eventually leaves — the plant is spending capital to signal. Brown crispy leaf tips are the accumulated bill. On the other side, a pot held at the top of the range with no drying cycle produces yellowing lower leaves and no flowers.

Common situations

Wet soil plus a wilting plant is a root problem, not a thirst problem, and this is the most important misread on this species. Roots that have rotted cannot take up water no matter how much is present, so the plant wilts in a wet pot — and the instinct to water it more is exactly wrong and finishes it. Unpot it: healthy peace lily roots are white and firm, rotted ones are brown and slide off the core when pulled. Other candidates for a wilt at 5 are cold damage and a pot standing in water.

What reading should I water a peace lily at?

Water at the low end of the healthy band rather than waiting for the wilt. The whole point of a meter on this species is to get ahead of the collapse — the plant only tells you once it is already spending reserves, and the number tells you a day or two earlier. If you are consistently catching it before the droop, the meter is doing its job.

My peace lily never flowers and reads 7 most of the time.

A pot that never dries is one of the common reasons for no flowers, alongside not enough light. Spathiphyllum needs a mild dry-down between waterings to set buds; held permanently damp it stays green, leafy and flowerless. Let it approach the bottom of the band before each watering for a couple of months and give it brighter indirect light.

One reading can't be trusted. The curve can.

Everything above is really one argument: a single number from a cheap conductivity probe is not a measurement, it is a data point with a large error bar. Fertilizer salt raises it. Air gaps in chunky mix lower it. Probe depth moves it several points. Two meters in the same pot disagree.

What survives all of that is the trend. The same meter, in the same spot, in the same pot, read over a few weeks, tells you how fast this specific peace lily in this specific mix in this specific room actually dries — and that is the thing that answers "do I water it", which no chart can do for you.
