ZZ Plant: what your moisture meter reading means

What each reading means for a ZZ plant
A ZZ plant wants water below 12% and starts staying wetter than it likes above 40%. On the 1–10 probe most people own, that works out like this.

The number depends on your soil, and most charts ignore that
A ZZ plant is usually in standard potting mix cut with perlite; happiest on the gritty side.
The ZZ stores its own water in potato-like rhizomes, so the soil moisture number matters less here than for anything else on this list — the plant is running off internal reserves regardless. What the meter is actually telling you is how long the pot has been holding water against those rhizomes, and that is a rot clock, not a thirst gauge.
Adjusting for your mix
Amended, perlite-heavy mix: readings run slightly low and the pot dries in two to three weeks — ideal. Straight dense potting mix: the pot can hold a mid-range reading for over a month, and that is the danger zone even though the plant will look completely fine the entire time. Pot size matters more than mix here: an oversized pot is the classic ZZ killer.

Where to put the probe
Mid-depth, at the pot edge, well away from the rhizomes — they are large, shallow and easy to hit, and a probe touching one reads the rhizome's water content, which is always high and always misleading. If you feel firm resistance before the probe is halfway in, you found a rhizome. Move to the pot wall.
How a ZZ plant actually fails
The rhizomes rot from underneath in total silence. The first visible sign is usually a whole stalk yellowing from the bottom and going limp at once — not gradual leaf drop. By then several rhizomes are usually soft. Unpot and squeeze one: firm like a potato is fine, giving at all is rot. A ZZ that reads mid-range continuously is being slowly killed no matter how good it looks.
Common situations
My ZZ plant reads 5 and looks perfectly healthy.
The look is not evidence — a ZZ runs on stored water and looks fine for weeks after the roots are in trouble. What matters is how long it has read 5. Two days after watering, that is normal and correct. Three weeks after watering, the pot is not drying, and the plant looking healthy is precisely the trap: the damage is happening below and the foliage has not spent its reserves yet. Check the trend, not the number.
How dry should a ZZ plant get?
Effectively all the way — into the bottom band of the meter, and then a few more days. This is not neglect; it is the drying cycle the rhizomes evolved for. The practical rule is that a ZZ should spend most of each cycle DRY and only briefly wet, which is the inverse of how most people water it.
The meter reads 1 and the plant has not grown in months.
Underwatering is possible but light is the more likely answer. A ZZ in genuinely low light stops growing and drinks almost nothing, which is why the pot reads dry — the plant is idling, not thirsty. Water it normally and move it somewhere brighter; if growth resumes over the next couple of months, light was the constraint.
One reading can't be trusted. The curve can.
Everything above is really one argument: a single number from a cheap conductivity probe is not a measurement, it is a data point with a large error bar. Fertilizer salt raises it. Air gaps in chunky mix lower it. Probe depth moves it several points. Two meters in the same pot disagree.
What survives all of that is the trend. The same meter, in the same spot, in the same pot, read over a few weeks, tells you how fast this specific ZZ plant in this specific mix in this specific room actually dries — and that is the thing that answers "do I water it", which no chart can do for you.
