Pothos: what your moisture meter reading means
The healthy band for a pothos, on whichever scale your meter prints — and, more usefully, what the same number means in different situations.

That is the band you are aiming for, not a target to hit exactly. These ranges are published horticultural consensus and have not yet been through expert review — they are deliberately banded wide.
What each reading means for a pothos
A pothos wants water below 25% and starts staying wetter than it likes above 55%. On the 1–10 probe most people own, that works out like this.

Every row here is derived from this species' own thresholds — a pothos at 4 and a snake plant at 4 are in genuinely different situations.
The number depends on your soil, and most charts ignore that
A pothos is usually in standard peat-based potting mix, often quite dense straight from the nursery.
Pothos is usually sold in the cheapest possible dense peat mix, and that mix is hydrophobic when it dries fully — water runs down the inside of the pot and straight out the bottom without wetting the core. So a pothos can read 2 immediately after you watered it, because the water never touched the root ball. This is the species where "I watered it and the number did not move" is most often literally true.
Adjusting for your mix
Dense nursery peat: if the reading does not rise within an hour of watering, the mix is repelling water — bottom-water it instead by standing the pot in a few inches of water for 20 minutes. Chunky or amended mix: readings track water honestly, and the range shifts about one point drier. Water-propagated cuttings potted up: expect erratic readings for a month while the water roots convert.

Where to put the probe
Straight down mid-pot, about half the depth. Pothos root balls are shallow and dense, and in a hanging pot the roots concentrate on the side that has been facing the light — take two readings on opposite sides and use the lower one. Do not probe near the trailing vines; those roots are ornamental, not the ones drinking.
How a pothos actually fails
Pothos does not rot dramatically; it goes soft and stops. The tell is a stem that turns black and mushy right at the soil line while the leaves furthest out still look fine — the plant is running on stored water in the vines while the crown is already gone. Yellow leaves that drop from the base while new growth continues is normal aging. Yellow leaves appearing all along a vine at once is the water problem.
Common situations
My pothos reads 2 right after I watered it.
The water did not reach the roots. Dry peat mix is water-repellent, so it channels down the gap between the root ball and the pot wall and out the drainage hole in seconds — the pot feels heavy, the saucer fills, and the core is untouched. Stand the pot in a few inches of water for twenty minutes and re-probe. If the number climbs, that was it, and the pot is due to be repotted into a mix that wets.
My pothos reads 7 and the leaves are yellowing — too much water?
Probably, but check where the yellow is first. Yellowing that starts at the oldest leaves nearest the soil and moves outward, with a 7 that has not moved in a week, is overwatering. Yellowing scattered along the middle of a vine while the tip keeps growing is more often a light problem, and a pothos in low light drinks so slowly that the pot stays wet — which then genuinely does become overwatering. The reading and the light problem are the same problem.
How low can a pothos safely go?
Lower than almost anything else on this list. Pothos will sit at 1 for several days and recover fully once watered — it is one of the few common houseplants where under-watering is a mistake you can simply undo. That tolerance is why it is so often killed by overwatering instead: people water on the schedule the plant does not need.
One reading can't be trusted. The curve can.
Everything above is really one argument: a single number from a cheap conductivity probe is not a measurement, it is a data point with a large error bar. Fertilizer salt raises it. Air gaps in chunky mix lower it. Probe depth moves it several points. Two meters in the same pot disagree.
What survives all of that is the trend. The same meter, in the same spot, in the same pot, read over a few weeks, tells you how fast this specific pothos in this specific mix in this specific room actually dries — and that is the thing that answers "do I water it", which no chart can do for you.
